Bitcoin Core developers have been working on a new protocol called “Blockchain Apts” that they hope will make it easier to store and retrieve data from decentralized networks like Bitcoin, as well as make it possible to build decentralized applications on top of the protocol.
The new blockchain-as-a-service (BaaS) software-as:-a (BASE) software layer will allow the creation of a blockchain and its data, and make it easy to use decentralized applications that can work on top.
A key feature of the new protocol is that the data can be stored in any blockchain, rather than on a centralized ledger like Ethereum or the Bitcoin blockchain.
“In the future, we will allow you to use any blockchain and any application to run and maintain decentralized applications,” wrote Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin, in a 2013 blog post.
Bitcoin Core developer Luke Dashjr wrote in a blog post that “we’ll eventually be able to have a complete blockchain and all of its associated data stored on any of the many blockchains we have today.”
Blockchain AptS is a software layer that allows the creation and storage of a block of data in a decentralized network, and is currently being worked on by three separate companies, Bitcoin.com reported.
It’s also not clear how long this technology will be available for use, or whether it will be open-sourced.
“We’re hoping this will be out in the first half of next year,” said Jeff Garzik, the Bitcoin Core development team lead.
“Right now it’s only been a matter of time, but it’s going to be quite a while before we can have a full set of features in place.”
Bitcoin.org, a Bitcoin-centric news site, reported on March 14 that the first version of BlockAptS will be released in early 2018.
The software will enable users to build applications on the blockchain using existing libraries like Bitcoin Core and libbitcoin, and it will allow anyone to write their own libraries on top, as long as they adhere to the protocol specifications.
BlockAps is a new blockchain layer that will allow applications to run on top and manage data on a decentralized ledger.
It will be “a fundamental upgrade” to the existing blockchain protocol, said Gavin Andresen, Bitcoin Core’s developer.
Bitcoin.info said that the BaaS software-and-data layer will “allow users to create applications that work on the Bitcoin protocol, but only under the supervision of the Bitcoin network,” but not the blockchain itself.
This is in contrast to Ethereum, which has been described by Ethereum’s creator Vitalik Buterin as a “full node” that will operate in parallel with the Bitcoin core.
Buteris said Ethereum will eventually “start being a full node.”
Bitcoin Core Developer Andresens wrote that the BlockAss software will be able “to securely store and access any data on any blockchain.”
“The protocol will be designed to make this happen,” he wrote.
“BlockApts will allow any application on any network to access and manage any data in the blockchain.
We’re working on it.”
Bitcoin Unlimited developer Mike Hearn wrote on March 17 that the Blockchain Aps software will allow users to store “any blockchain data they want and easily transfer it over to any other network,” without “further centralization.”
He also wrote that BlockAplss “will allow any developer to create their own blockchain that can run any decentralized application, without any central authority.”
BlockA plas is currently the only available BaaSS layer for Bitcoin Core.
Bitcoin Unlimited developers Mike Hearns and Mike Hearne wrote in an April 3 blog post, however, that “the BlockA pt software is still under development, so expect some bugs in the coming months.”
Block.it developers also announced the development of the Block Apt S software layer in April 2017, and said that it will enable “an open and flexible architecture for Bitcoin applications that run on any node in the world, including on Bitcoin’s blockchain.”
S is currently “under development,” said Mike Hearnt, a developer at Blockchain Block.
“But we hope it will become available in Q2 2018.”
Block Aps BlockA pax will allow developers to build and store their own applications on Bitcoin Core, and then transfer the data from their application to BlockA for storage on BlockA’s network.
Block A pax is currently under development.
But it is not clear when BlockApax will be made available for download.
“It will likely be available in the early part of next month,” said Bitcoin Core co-founder and CEO Jeff Garza.
“The BlockA port is a bit of a long way off, but we’re very excited to see what it can do.”
